Abstract
The formation of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) in a binary Cu-Zr system by copper mold casting was studied. An approach to pinpoint the composition with the optimum glass forming ability (GFA) was also described. It was found that the BMG-forming range was off-eutectic and very narrow, and required composition pinpointing to <1 at %. The strong composition dependence required for any binary system to be a potential candidate for BMG was also discussed.
