Abstract
Critical cooling rates for glass formation in Mg65Ni20Nd15 alloys are computed to be 0.051 ± 0.016 and 9.5 ± 3.4 K/s respectively using the kinetic theory of crystallization developed by Uhlmann. The dependence of the viscosity on the temperature for the alloy was determined from thermal measurements based on the method developed by Chen. The calculated critical cooling rates were found to be lower than the experimentally measured values for the alloy.
