Abstract

A marked effect of load on measured microhardness is reported for melt-spun Mg-4.7 wt% Al-0.8 wt% Zn alloy for both Vickers and Knoop tests, with and without the presence of a lubricant. Analysis of the results according to the approach used recently for pure Fe by Li et al. and for some intermetallics by Bystrzycki and Varin gives an intrinsic hardness H0 of 42 ± 5 and 36 ± 2 kg/mm2 for this material from Vickers and Knoop tests respectively.
