Abstract
To find a starting point for further development of possible Al based bulk metallic glasses, two ternary systems of Al-Ni-Y and Al-Co-Y were selected for studying their glass formability by monitoring microstructure variations. It was shown that the easy glass forming composition region in these systems is away from the composition of exhibiting a glass transition characteristic. The best glass former Al85Ni4Y8 and Al85Co4Y8 (numbers indicate at.%), with the thickness up to 200 μm, was characterized by a non-obvious glass transition and a low primary crystallization temperature.
