Abstract
A systematic study was carried out on proton-exchanged LiNbO3 optical waveguides using pyrophosphoric acid. A maximum surface index increase of 0.145 was measured at 0.633 μm for z-cut substrates. The index profile could be accurately modelled by a polynomial expression or simply by a 'truncated' step-index profile.
