Abstract

Proton-exchanged optical waveguides have been fabricated in z-cut LiNbO3using cinnamic acid. The index profiles of these waveguides were found to be different from those obtained using other organic acids, and could be modelled accurately by a truncated-parabolic function. The maximum surface index increase is 0.141 and is the largest value reported for proton exchange process using organic acids.
